Frequently Asked Questions for ButtonGadget
Is there a Mac version?

Currently, we are working on a Macintosh version of ButtonGadget. If you're interested in using the Mac version please contact us and we will email you as soon as it is available.

Am I limited to only the Button Sets available online?

Absolutely not. You can build your own ButtonSets from scratch. In fact there's an online tutorial to show you how. Just import a GIF, JPG or PNG blank button image and add any text font, color, size and style to it you wish. You can save your favorite setting as your very own ButtonSets...and you may also upload them to the ButtonGadget website to share with others. If you like, you can download blank buttons at www.freebuttons.com.

What if I don't see a ButtonSet I like? Will you make one for me?

If we like the button idea, we'll be glad to build a ButtonSet for registered users. Just send us a screen capture of a button you would like to see converted into a ButtonSet. Of course, if you have Photoshop or other image editor, you can build your own ButtonSets also.

Why does a new version of ButtonGadget launch each time I download a ButtonSet?

Because ButtonGadget is a registered MIME type for your browser, it willl automatically launch a new instance of the ButtonGadget program and load the newly downloaded ButtonSet. In this manner, you can have multiple ButtonGadget applications open at the same time. If you don't like working with multiple ButtonGadget apps open, you also have the option of closing the application when you go online to download new ButtonSets.

Can I change the color of the text for just one of the 4 buttons?

Sure! Just click on the button you want to edit, then change the text color by clicking on the Text Color button. If you want to make sure and get an exact match for a color, you can download and use our Hemtool utility.

How can I copy the Mouse Over button image to the Mouse Down button?

This is easy. You need to understand how the Copy Image to All button works. It copies the background image to ONLY the OTHER VISIBLE images. So, to copy the Mouse Over button to the Mouse Down button, you'll need to hilite the Mouse Over button by clicking on it. Then hide all the other buttons except the Mouse Down button. Then press the Copy Image to All button and it will copy the image for the Mouse Over to the Mouse Down button.

Can I mix and match buttons from different ButtonSets?

Sure you can. You just export 'blank' buttons (PNG format) from one ButtonSet and then import them to another using the Load Image button. Make sure you have no text, shadows or hilites, and clear the Use Background Color checkbox when you export as PNG.

Can I use these buttons for commercial websites?

Certainly! That's what ButtonGadget was created for. The only restriction is you cannot use ButtonGadget buttons to create clip art or clip buttons for other websites, CD-Roms etc.. In otherwords, if you are a commercial seller of CD-ROM clipart, you cannot use ButtonGadget buttons for resale.

What is the Disabled button for?

Some applications have a disabled state for buttons. Most cases, we use the Disabled button to store a Mouse Down for the Normal Button. You can click the checkbox 'show disabled state' in the View Button tab to preview how the disabled state will look.

How come there are no Mouse Down or Disabled states for certain buttons?

It depends on the button design and the designer. A button like the 'Bubble Text' button is meant to only show one state, the Normal state, so valid Mouse Over, Mouse Down and Disabled states are not rendered. Authors can save whatever states they wish with a ButtonSet by just showing or hiding the specified button.

How can I modify the Javascript so muliple buttons on a page will work?

"Not a valid Buttonset" Error

1) Check to see if you're using Internet Explorer and not Mozilla or Netscape as your browser
2) If you are using IE and you still get this message *AFTER* clicking on a buttonset, then it means the buttonset is not being downloaded from the webpage. This is probably because you have a firewall or proxy server turned on and set to not allow certain filetypes to download. The filetype for a buttonset is: "plg"

You should set your firewall to allow files with the extension "plg" to be able to download.

You can always right-click on a button and "Save Target" to a place on your disk, then double-click the *.plg file you just saved and it will launch ButtonGadget and load it for you.
